A cuppa and chat with Emma on all things Reward & Benefits at White Stuff
We spoke to Emma Jones, Head of People and Development at Casa Del White Stuff (HQ) to get the lowdown on how we look after our fellow White Stuffers. From our benefits and rewards, to what you can expect when you join the team, everything you need to know is here.
Q: How would you describe our Reward and Benefits package at White Stuff?
Our approach to Rewards and Benefits at White Stuff is simply to try and get it right for individual people and to always do the right thing by them. As we’ve grown over the years we’ve enhanced our all the good stuff we offer our staff but have maintained a strong set of core foundations. I’d like to think that we have a strong benefits package in comparison to many other retailers and we listen to people to understand what more we could be doing to support, reward and engage our teams to thank them for their hard work. We are always keen to hear ideas as to how we can do better; for example, one team member suggested a way we could recognise hard work from across the business and it’ll be launching at Casa Del White Stuff in the coming months… so watch this space!
But it doesn’t stop there. One of the other suggested benefits that we are particularly proud of is our ‘Share Shed’ scheme. This rewards both long term service and contribution to business performance by awarding colleagues Share Options within the business for an opportunity to receive a financial incentive, based on the long term success of White Stuff. It really captures the essence of what rewards are all about; an individual connection to the business and appreciation for the hard work, wellbeing, contribution and dedication of our teams.
Q: How does your role impact upon the Reward and Benefits on offer at White Stuff?
My role as Head of People and Development is about ensuring that we are keeping our rewards and benefits competitive and attractive for our colleagues. Every year we benchmark our pay and benefits to look at how we compare to everyone else; it’s really important to me that we do that well, consistently and fairly. I take that responsibility very seriously as I want to be confident in the fairness of what we offer.
Q: So you get the job. What can new starters expect from their benefits package when they join?
Firstly, a fair and competitive starting-salary for the role we have recruited them to do. Whether you are joining us in one of our Shops, the Leicester DC or our London HQ we have tried to tailor make a package exclusively for you. Whatever role a new colleague joins us to do, everyone has access to ‘The Biscuit Tin,’ a one-stop-shop for helping you to see the benefits on offer. From travel loans, staff discount and pension contributions, to health or dental care, bonus opportunities and community volunteering days.
We also have training and development-based rewards linked to pay, for example for our Customer Host teams in our Shops. As a Customer Host you are entitled to develop through our ‘Hosting White Stuff’ development programme; an opportunity for supported learning and growth with pay rises awarded for each successful level completed. Ultimately we want to make coming to work at White Stuff fun, engaging, rewarding and with a tailor-made benefits package to suit you. We work very hard every year to challenge ourselves to be even better.
